Tissue Bank Bern (TBB)

The Tissue Bank Bern (TBB) is a human diseased-related, solid tissue bio-repository. The aim of the TBB is to provide researchers with access to high quality human tissue samples and related data in compliance to the Federal Human Research Act and Ordinance, 2014 and Swiss Biobanking Platform standards. This is done through optimal sample collection, storage, distribution and documentation.

The demand for high quality and clinically documented samples is increasing, as an extraordinary amount of biomarker research activities are taking place in the field of personalised medical research. TBB is an active core facility, focused on the continuous development of processes to meet the researcher’s requirements.

QUALITY Standards

Quality is one of the main motives for TBB. This is ensured by process standardisation and optimisation along the entire sample processing chain, starting with the collection, transport, storage and dispensing of the sample material, but also with regard to staff training and equipment.

In this aspect, the close collaboration with the Suisse Biobanking Platform (SBP) and its requirements for quality management and  procedure standardisation has been extremely fruitful. In particular, we were the first tissue bank in Switzerland obtaining the SBP's three quality labels, namely VITA, Norma and Optima.  Additionally, the collection and storage of the TBB samples are included under the Institute of Pathology accreditation by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) according to ISO 17025:2005 and ISO 15189:2013.

In addition, TBB supports researchers in an advisory capacity in their research activities. We provide our expertise in the best possible sample processing, also with regard to ethical, legal and social aspects of biobanking, so-called ELSI standards.
